Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday highlighted the battle between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over the federal government funding bill.

“There are huge differences in the Republican party,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “On the floor of the Senate, we saw the soul of the Republican party being debated. Ted Cruz was in the well, pushing his so-called Constitutional point of order, which risked shutting down the government.”

Schumer noted that about half of Senate Republicans voted against the funding bill, nearly causing the government to shut down.

But when host Candy Crowley noted that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) both voted against the bill, Schumer insisted that Democrats were not divided.

“I think that the differences among Democrats are small compared to the huge chasm of Republicans,” he responded. “On the fundamental issues that face us — the economic issues that we need to address to get the middle class moving again, to get middle class incomes going again — there’s amazing unity on the Democratic side.”
