After his Indiana primary win made him the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump said Wednesday he doesn’t need endorsements from Republicans who were “nasty” to him earlier in the race.
Asked on MSNBC if he cares if Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who dropped out Tuesday night, endorsed him, Trump responded, “I think it’d be nice.”
“I’ve been saying for a long time that there’s some people that, I almost don’t want their endorsement, Republicans, because it was too rough and they were too nasty, and I don’t think it’s going to matter, frankly. It’s going to be me,” Trump said in a call-in interview on “Morning Joe.”
The billionaire also said he’s fielded numerous calls “from people who were far more brutal than Ted” but now want to join his campaign.
“I said to them, how can you do that after what you said. They said, ‘don’t worry about, it’s not a problem,’ because they’re politicians. It’s talk,” Trump said.
“I’ve had calls – I’ll have to tell you about them, calls really wanting to get on immediately,” he told the MSNBC hosts, who have fielded frequent criticism for appearing too cozy with Trump.
