New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) was elected chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association on Thursday.

“All across America, Republican governors are doing what Washington can’t: getting the big things done to move our country forward,” Christie said in a statement. “We’re leading with conviction, making tough decisions and getting the job done in our states. I’m honored to serve as Chairman of the RGA at this important time, and will work tirelessly over the next year to provide our governors and candidates with the resources they need to win.”

Christie was re-elected as governor in November with 60 percent of the vote in a Democratic-leaning state, fueling speculation that he might run for president in 2016.

Christie has not ruled out a bid, but has insisted that he is focused on governing in New Jersey and leading the RGA for the time being. And while many tout Christie as a 2016 hopeful, some of his Republican colleagues have cast doubt on his prospects in a presidential race.
