Mark Herring, D-Loudoun, speaks about a budget bill passed during the Senate session at the Capitol in Richmond, Va. The Senate passed an amended version of a House budget. Theyíre both state senators named Mark, and the two candidates for attorney general say they would advocate ethics reform and fight human trafficking. But thatís where the similarities end. Republican Mark Obenshain has a long record as a soldier of the conservative culture wars, while Democrat Mark Herring has been a loyal member of the minority in the closely divided Senate, arguing for abortion rights and gun control. State Sen. Mark Herring (D) has widened his lead 305 votes after the first day of the Virginia attorney general recount.

The 305 votes is an increase from the 165-vote lead that Herring previously had over state Sen. Mark Obenshain (R), who requested the recount.

“We saw significant growth in the margin of the Herring victory today; frankly, greater than we initially anticipated,” Herring campaign lawyer Marc Elias said in a statement.  “We expect to maintain or increase this margin as the recount expands to additional jurisdictions tomorrow.  We look forward to the Court declaring MarkHerring the winner of the recount later this week.”

Most of the recounting occurred in Fairfox County and two cities: Alexandria and Chesapeake on Monday. Recounting for the rest of Virginia’s localities will happen Tuesday, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Officials expect most of the recounting to be done by the end of Tuesday.
