| | | | | | Hello readers! There’s a growing voter fraud scandal coming out of Florida. It’s got nothing to do with illegally cast ballots and everything to do with Republican Party canvassers. Got a voting rights story you think our readers should hear? Respond to this email and tell me about it. Alright, let’s dig in. | | | | |
| | | | | | What The Heck Is Going On In Florida? (Part II) | | | | |
| | We reported earlier this year on some strange reports coming out of South FLORIDA: Democratic and no-party-affiliation voters were telling news outlets that their party registrations had been switched against their will. Some remembered talking to Republican Party canvassers ahead of the switch, but said they had not intended to switch their party registration as part of those conversations. Now, The Miami Herald has an alarming story on the scope of the problem: Going door-to-door in the affected area in recent weeks, Herald reporters found that the party affiliations of four out of every five voters they spoke to had been changed without their knowledge. That’s 141 people in total, the vast majority of whom had their registrations changed to the Republican Party, by Republican canvassers, without their intent. The voters described being misled by canvassers who told them they needed a new signature verification or voter ID card, the paper reported. Some didn’t remember speaking with canvassers at all. A spokesperson for the state Republican Party said that the party “follows all applicable laws relating to voter registration.” We haven’t heard the last of this. | | | | |
| | | | | | Ohio Supreme Court Has Had It With Redistricting Commission | | | | |
| | It apparently took the threat of being found in contempt of court for the Republican-dominated OHIO Redistricting Commission to do its job. The commission, which includes the state’s Republican governor and other high-profile politicians, has repeatedly produced maps that the state’s Supreme Court found to be unconstitutionally partisan. The latest deadline to submit a constitutional map came and went without a proposal from the commission — leading the court’s Republican chief justice to schedule a hearing to consider finding the commissioners in contempt. On that same day, the commission approved a new set of maps, again. The contempt hearing was delayed to give plaintiffs in the suit time to file any objections they had to the latest map — and they did. In an email Monday, lawyers representing those challenging the redistricting commission said “the new maps, like their predecessors, violate the Ohio constitution’s prohibitions against partisan gerrymandering.” | | | | |
| | | | The spike in ballot rejections in TEXAS, due to Republicans’ onerous new voting law, has received the New York Times treatment. The numbers continue to be shocking. Acting after the legislature and the governor locked heads on congressional redistricting, the PENNSYLVANIA Supreme Court implemented a congressional map proposed by a group of Democratic voters. The NORTH CAROLINA Supreme Court accepted the legislature’s redrawn legislative maps and, importantly, chose to implement a congressional map drawn by special masters. In both Pennsylvania and North Carolina, Republicans have filed emergency applications with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking it to intervene in their favor where they struck out at the state level. A Memphis, TENNESSEE judge granted a motion for a new trial in the case of Pamela Moses, who faced prison time for voting after mistakenly being told by a probation officer that she could. The panel tasked with replacing LOUISIANA’s ancient voting machines says it needs more time. The DOJ declined to intervene in a lawsuit over ARKANSAS’ new congressional maps. Soon after, a federal judge officially dismissed the case, which argued that the maps unconstitutionally watered down the power of Black Arkansans. The FLORIDA state senate is preparing to take up yet another election “security” bill, which among other things would create a special election police force. | | | | |

| | | | | | | | The Latest In Election Sabotage | | | | |
| | The CONSERVATIVE POLITICAL ACTION CONFERENCE was last week and weekend, which meant plenty of lying about the 2020 election. CNN’s Daniel Dale said the most dishonest speech he heard at the event came from OHIO U.S. Senate candidate Josh Mandel, who said Trump won the state by an even higher margin than his certified eight-point win. Also at CPAC, GEORGIA’s own Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said “I believe” that the election was stolen. “Do I know how? No, I don’t know how,” she added. (Greene later appeared at the white nationalist America First Political Action Conference.) | | | | |
