This Week: How Will Dem House Chairs Check The Trump Administration?
In June, I appeared on The Josh Marshall Podcast to discuss the difference it would make, in terms of Trump-Swamp-related matters, if Democrats controlled the House of Representatives. The four topics I discussed then — the administration’s effort to bury a study on the danger of a widely used class of toxic chemicals, the Trump-created crisis of family separation at the border, the Department of Education’s en masse dismissal of civil rights complaints, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’ stock hijinks — were an odd mix, but they highlighted the almost unimaginably vast role that congressional oversight, or lack thereof, plays in the federal government. Now, with Democrats taking back the majority in the House of Representatives, the oversight discussion has been electrified: What will Democrats prioritize? And how, even, will the they keep organized the hundreds of future letters, hearings, and subpoenas at their fingertips? Worried Republicans may hold the answer.
