Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam repeated in an interview Sunday that he will not resign despite revelations that he’d appeared in blackface in the past.

“Right now, Virginia needs someone that can heal,” he told CBS “This Morning” co-host Gayle King. “There’s no better person to do that than a doctor.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Northam said. Part of the interview aired on “Face the Nation” Sunday morning.

“Yes, I have thought about resigning,” Northam added later. “But I’ve also thought about what Virginia needs right now, and I really think that I’m in a position where I can take Virginia to the next level, and it will be very positive.”

At the beginning of the interview, Northam referred to 2019 as the 400th anniversary of “the first indentured servants from Africa land[ing] on our shores.”

“Also known as slavery,” King responded.
