The publicly silent son-in-law to the President is emerging as a voice of restraint within the West Wing when it comes to President Trump’s wall war, The Wall Street Journal reported

According White House officials who spoke to the WSJ, Jared Kushner said in a recent Oval Office meeting that the authority to declare a national emergency shouldn’t be enacted just to “win a messaging war against Democrats opposed to the wall,” in WSJ’s words.

“Let’s stop doing things just to do them,” Kushner said, according to officials familiar with the meeting who spoke to WSJ.

That restraint comes in contrast with President Trump’s most recent remarks about whether he intends to declare a national emergency in order to secure wall funding. During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday evening, Trump said he couldn’t think of a reason why he wouldn’t do it.
