“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough smelled something fishy in the National Enquirer’s expose on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ personal life and alleged infidelities.

“And now they’re doing a hit job on a guy — I know Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world. But let me tell you something. That ain’t a guy who’s on Entertainment Tonight or Entertainment Weekly or InStyle or anything like that,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe” Friday.

“That’s not a guy that Americans say hey, I wonder what’s happening in Jeff Bezos’ life. This was a directed hit job, and the only people that would know about Jeff Bezos and care about him going down might be his competitors but also Donald Trump — and his supporters,” Scarborough continued.

Scarborough also pointed out that he and his co-host Mika Brzezinski have received “frantic” calls from the White House asking for an apology to Trump or suffer the wrath of the Enquirer.

Trump has frequently targeted Amazon and Bezos. And the checkout-aisle tabloid has long done Trump’s dirty work. The Enquirer’s parent company, American Media Inc., reached a plea deal with prosecutors back in December over its payment to bury Karen McDougal’s story of an alleged affair with Trump.

“It’s now a matter of public knowledge that the National Enquirer and American Media was in bed with Donald Trump and working on his behalf. I guess the question is would they continue it after striking deal as they have with the Southern District?” MSNBC’s Willie Geist asked.

“It sure seems like it,” Scarborough answered.
