House Oversight Committee Chair Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said Friday morning that the House may need to consider impeaching President Trump, but that members of Congress need to first get a better understanding of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Cummings made the comment on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” after the congressman said that Trump’s conduct laid out in the section of the redacted Mueller report about obstruction was “at least 100 times worse” than what former President Bill Clinton came under scrutiny for.
“We’ve got to go against this. We’ve got to expose it,” Cummings said. “A lot of people keep asking about the question of impeachment. We may very well come to that very soon, but right now let’s make sure we understand what Mueller was doing, understand what Barr was doing, and see the report in an unredacted form and all of the underlying documents.”
Cummings’ comment set him apart slightly from other Democratic leaders in the House following the Mueller report, who have refrained from calling for Trump’s impeachment in the wake of the redacted report’s release.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said Thursday afternoon that “impeachment is not worthwhile at this point.”
