The only person to contribute to Sen. John Ensign’s re-election campaign this year says he thinks the scandal-plagued lawmaker is “a really good guy.”

“He did some bad things with his personal life,” Robert Donald, a Las Vegas retiree, told TPMmuckraker. “But as a senator, he’s doing the right thing. He votes the right way.”

He added: “He’s back with his family, so I don’t see any problems.”

Besides, Donald said, “all men are dogs, the way I look at it.”

As we reported this morning, Donald’s two $25 contributions were the only contributions to Ensign’s re-election campaign this year. The Nevada senator is up for re-election in 2012, but has not yet said whether he intends to run.

Donald, a retired Newark police officer who said he had been on the force during the riots of the 1960s, described himself as a “good Republican” who has contributed to, and volunteered for, numerous GOP campaigns. He admitted to being surprised to learn of his status as the senator’s only 2010 contributor.

Ensign is currently being investigated by the Justice Department, which is looking into whether he broke lobbying or other laws in trying to help a former aide whose wife he had had an affair with.
