Fired White House National Security Staffer’s Harshest Tweets

The Daily Beast reported Tuesday that Jofi Joseph, who helped negotiate policy on Iran as the director of the non-proliferation section of the White House National Security Staff, was fired last week when he was discovered as the man behind an anonymous Twitter account bashing the Obama administration and its foreign policy.

From the @natsecwonk account, Joseph vexed his colleagues with candid and often insulting opinions of White House staff. National political figures and journalists, including the Daily Beast reporter who discovered his alias, were also hit with Joseph’s snark. Here’s a sample of tweets from the now-deleted account, culled from Google Search results:

Jun 11, 2013 – The number of people who think @hillaryclinton personally writes her own tweets makes me weep for the future of American democracy.

@EricDKoch Look, Issa is an ass, but he’s on to something here with the @HillaryClinton whitewash of accountability for Benghazi.

Apr 16, 2013 – Hearing that Sam Powers is in final stages of vetting for nomination to replace Maria Otero as Under Secretary of All That Soft Power Crap.

Oct 2, 2013 – Can someone again brief @AmbassadorPower that Bashar Assad likely doesn’t follow her Twitter feed?

Feb 7, 2013 – “Oh fuck, Kerry has been in this job for 4days and he’s already boring the bejesus out of everyone in this room!”

Jul 21, 2013 – Anyone else get the sense that the White House really could care less whether John Kerry succeeds at his Israel-Palestine peace effort?

Sep 19, 2013 – When will @grahamblog provide concrete verifiable assurances that he is in fact a straight man? Which no one believes, by the by.

Jul 18, 2013 – I’m dying to call out Liz Cheney for the overweight fat pig that she is. But then I remember that Mike Enzi weighs even more. #fail.

Oct 8, 2013 – Word on the street? @rhodes44 getting ready to cash out and join Beacon Global Strategies, aka Douches Incorporated.

Oct 5, 2013 – Thanks @jonfavs for the new profile pic — now all of us can see just how much gel you put into your precious hair!

Sep 19, 2013 – Remember folks, every time @marcthiessen bloviates about Obama, this is the same fat pig who used to work for racist in chief Jesse Helms.

10 Oct. Vitriol against @arifleischer entirely justified. He married a woman a decade younger than him – and she’s as ugly as he is! #jackass

Oct 3, 2013 – Me thinks @Peggynoonannyc and @chrismatthews should get together and swap stories, share some drinks and discuss why they are irrelevant

26 SepNatSecWonk @NatSecWonk. Just a hunch, but I have the sense lots of people would like to punch @joshrogin in the face.

Dear Reader,

When we asked recently what makes TPM different from other outlets, readers cited factors like honesty, curiosity, transparency, and our vibrant community. They also pointed to our ability to report on important stories and trends long before they are picked up by mainstream outlets; our ability to contextualize information within the arc of history; and our focus on the real-world consequences of the news.

Our unique approach to reporting and presenting the news, however, wouldn’t be possible without our readers’ support. That’s not just marketing speak, it’s true: our work would literally not be possible without readers deciding to become members. Not only does member support account for more than 80% of TPM’s revenue, our members have helped us build an engaged and informed community. Many of our best stories were born from reader tips and valuable member feedback.

We do what other news outlets can’t or won’t do because our members’ support gives us real independence.

If you enjoy reading TPM and value what we do, become a member today.
