A visibly angry Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) excoriated fellow Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions (AL) on the Senate floor Thursday ahead of his expected objection to a Ukraine aid bill.
“In a bit of preemption of the senator from Alabama, your argument is wrong that this is taking money out of defense,” McCain said. “You are dead wrong.”
He added, “I’ll match my record with the senator of Alabama on defense spending any time, day or night. And the fact is that this money is taken out of programs that were already canceled and were going to be returned to the Treasury. And if they had been used for defense, then it would have busted the budget agreement that the senator from Alabama has so stoutly defended time after time.”
Sessions soon mounted his objection but didn’t want to get personal, asserting that if McCain had been elected president, Russia never would have invaded Crimea.
