Fox News host Brian Kilmeade said Wednesday that he regretted not countering Donald Trump on-air when the presumptive Republican presidential nominee brought up a rumor that Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) father was somehow connected to President John F. Kennedy’s assassin.

“I do regret not following up after he said Ted Cruz’s dad was with Lee Harvey Oswald. Kind of totally got me by surprise personally,” Kilmeade said on his radio show “Kilmeade & Friends,” as flagged by Media Matters. “I let myself down on that and I’ve been kicking myself ever since.”

During a Tuesday appearance on “Fox & Friends,” Trump repeated an unsubstantiated report from the supermarket tabloid National Enquirer that Cruz’s father, Rafael, was photographed with Lee Harvey Oswald before he killed Kennedy.

Trump said Wednesday, only after he won in the Indiana primary and Cruz dropped out of the race, that he doesn’t actually believe the conspiracy theory.

“Of course I don’t believe that. I wouldn’t believe it, but I did say ‘let people read it,'” Trump said.
