Hillary Clinton offered up a message of unity and cooperation for voters at her final campaign rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, after midnight on Tuesday morning.
Appearing looser than she had at rallies earlier in the day, Clinton took the stage to deafening cheers. With a grin, she said, “This is sure worth staying up for. I cannot imagine a better way of ending this campaign.”
She emphasized the stakes at play in Tuesday’s election, saying that voters have “never had a clearer choice” of candidates.
“It’s the most important election of our lifetimes,” Clinton said.
She told voters that she was optimistic about the future despite the long, combative campaign behind her.
“Our core values are being tested in this election, but my faith in our future has never been stronger,” Clinton said. “I love our country, and I believe in the American people, and I know if we bring everyone together, we can set goals and we can move toward them and we can feel that sense of accomplishment that comes with being part of something bigger than ourselves.”
Clinton framed the election as a matter of national vision beyond the two candidates.
“It’s not just my name or Donald Trump’s name on the ballot, it’s the kind of country we want,” she said. “Look, tomorrow night this election will end, but I want you to understand our work together will be just beginning.”
She called again for unity, and for voters to “repair the breaches” that have come to light over the course of the election.
“We have to bridge the divides in this country,” Clinton said. “We’ve got to be willing to start listening to each other again, respecting each other again.”
“We all have a role to play in building that better future for our country and for each of you,” she said.
She’s been magnificent and this last rally was absolutely electric, the crowd just beside itself. And this theme she’s been using in the last couple days of being part of something bigger than ourselves, it’s sheer brilliance. Trump is pure ego, pure solipsism, pure sick need, a creature without empathy for any other sentient being. Hillary is a large-hearted, wise human being who gets that people need meaning in their lives. That’s what something bigger than ourselves means. Connection, transcendence, caring and being cared for. It really is a stark choice. Will you be a lonely power-mad tyrant, or will you be part of a community, will you treat others well in the expectation they’ll return the favor as an expression of enlightened self-interest? For me it’s that second thing. I think about 99 percent of the posters here would say the same. Things look good in the polls. I think there are more decent people than awful people, more sensible people than deluded people. But today is Election Day and I guess we’ll see. Let’s wish ourselves luck.
I’m so glad that this election is coming to a close. She’s making such a glorious charge at the end. I like her emphasizing community, togetherness and goodness. So many surrogates cheering for her and pushing for a shared vision of what this country can be.
Remember when conservatives scorned her for writing ‘It takes a village’ in the 90’s? ‘No, it doesn’t take a village. It takes parents that no how to spank their kids. Moe-ron.’
In this case, it took a village to defeat the town bully.
