A Florida sheriff’s deputy was caught on video dragging a mentally incompetent woman through a county courthouse by her shackled ankles, the Sun Sentinel newspaper reported Monday.
Deputy Christopher Johnson, a 27-year-veteran of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, was placed on restricted duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation, the Sun Sentinel reported.
The video showed 28-year-old Dasyl Jeanette Rios — who the Sun Sentinel reported had just been declared mentally incompetent during a trespassing and criminal mischief case — being pulled down a hallway in the county courthouse in Fort Lauderdale.
“Stop! You’re hurting me!” she yelled. Later, she said: “All I wanted to do was sob for a few minutes — cry.”
Attorney Bill Gelin captured the scene with his cell-phone camera. “They could have had a wheelchair, they could have had a stretcher, they could have had somebody with just the slightest bit of compassion,” Gelin told WSVN.
