Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) said Sunday that Vice President Joe Biden wasn’t being “creepy” during an apparently cringe-worthy moment with the senator’s daughter during his mock swearing-in last week.

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace asked Coons about the viral video of Biden whispering to Coon’s visibly uncomfortable daughter, Maggie, and giving her a kiss on the head.

“Does she think the vice president is creepy?” Wallace asked.

“No, she doesn’t think the vice president is creepy,” Coons responded. “He’s known my kids their whole lives.”

Coons added that the vice president was actually just calming the girl’s nerves.

“I could hear him,” he told Wallace. “He was leaning forward and whispering some encouragement to her about how when he was sworn in and his own daughter Ashley was 13, she felt awkward and uncomfortable. He was encouraging her about how to get through a day with lots of cameras and lots of folks watching.”

“He was being Joe,” he added. “He was being thoughtful, and he was being sweet.”
