Update on Christie/Motorcycle Story

Earlier today we reported about NJ Gov. candidate Chris Christie’s latest traffic incident in which he mentioned being US Attorney and didn’t get a ticket.

We wanted to get more information on the accident — since the initial reports suggested a high degree of negligence (i.e., driving the wrong way on a one-way street) and didn’t go into specifics on the motorcyclist’s injuries. So we sent Eric Kleefeld down to the police station in Elizabeth. And I just got off the phone with Eric after he took an initial look at the police report. The issue of driving on the wrong side of the road appears a little different than first described. It seems more like Christie made a turn on to the one way street and pretty quickly had a collision with the motorcyclist. That’s not great. And it’s still a mystery to us why he wasn’t at least ticketed. But it doesn’t seem like he was just cruising down the street going the wrong direction for a few blocks or something.

And what happened to the victim?

The police report doesn’t give any details of the injuries. But the victim was able to answer the police officer’s questions at the scene. So that would suggest he remained lucid enough to answer questions.

We’re looking into a few other aspects of this story. And we should have more before the end of the day.
