Big Week For Health Care Reform

December 7, 2009 5:52 a.m.

We’re going to be following developments on the health care reform front especially closely this week. We’ve set up a Health Care Wire in the news section to the right there. Plus, we’ll have our usual presence on the Hill, where Brian Beutler is tracking negotiations among Senate Democrats, which is where most of the action will be this week.

In particular, things are expected to come to a head this week on two key sticking points: the public option and abortion. The public option deliberations among Senate Democrats could culminate in some sort of compromise at any time, but probably sooner rather than later. That will be the big thing to look for. Reaction to that compromise among House Democrats will also be telling.

Sen. Ben Nelson’s Senate-side equivalent to the Stupak amendment in the House, restricting coverage for abortion, might be unveiled today — with a vote on it expected soon.

By week’s end, we should have a much clearer picture of what bill the entire Senate will be voting on.
