The Democratic National Committee will go up on television with a new ad targeting Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie for their political activity during the midterm elections through groups which don’t need to disclose their donors.

TPM obtained a copy of the ad, which hits the GOP on a point the Democrats have been hammering of late — corporations getting involved in elections thanks to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.

A Democratic source released the ad this morning keyed to the former Bush strategists’ appearances on the Sunday shows, saying the ad would be broadcast on national cable this week.

“They all can of course clear all this up by releasing their donors,” the source said.

The ad slams the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as “shills” for big businesses who are “stealing our democracy.”

It also claims, “it appears they’re even taking secret foreign money to influence our elections,” a message the Democrats and left-leaning groups have kept pushing even though the New York Times basically debunked the foreign money meme in a big story Saturday. Politico’s Playbook reported this morning the Obama White House intends to keep using the issue, with a focus on the fact these groups aren’t required to meet the same transparency rules as candidates.

Our coverage of this issue is here and here.
