This morning, MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan defended Rick Santorum’s remark about President Obama’s stance on abortion, saying his “facts are right” and “Santorum is saying that you’ve constricted it and taken that right of personhood and life away from a whole class of folks” by not considering unborn children people who are protected by the Constitution. And that “was exactly what was done to African-Americans for 250 years, and you go to Dred Scott, they are not persons under the Constitution.”
Santorum said earlier this week that “I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say, ‘we’re going to decide who are people and who are not people.'”
“There is something to back up what he said,” Buchanan said today.
He took it a step further:
Disproportionately, African-American women are the ones having abortions, and it’s African-American unborn babies who are being destroyed at a disproportionate rate. And this whole, if you will, birth control and abortion movement goes back to a fairly shameful period in American history, back before World War II — eugenics movement — which had dreadful slogans as “more from the fit and less from the unfit.” So his facts are correct.
Santorum also defended his comments on Fox News last night, telling Greta Van Susteren that “when you treat a child, a child in the womb as property, it’s the equivalent of what happened during the first part of this country, when we had this huge scar on us that we did not treat blacks as people.”
