WHAT IF THE SHOE WERE ON THE OTHER FOOT AND OBAMA HAD PALINS PROBLEMS
McCain selected a far right wing VP to appeal to and excite his base, knowing that Palin is a member of a far right group with a goal to put Alaska first and possibly exit our great Union of States and that she had a teenage daughter who is pregnant.
I agree with Senator Obama that the daughter issue is out of bounds and her prIvacy should be respected--- but I only ask the question : what if it was Obama's daughter who was a teenager and was having a child out of wedlock. Would the right wing zealots and Mr. Dobson support Obama or would the discourse be different.
Likewise, what if Obama was a member of a fringe political party that wanted to separate from the United States before he was a Democrat. Would the Republican Zealots give him credit for being independent minded or would they consider his past affiliation as UN AMERICAN .
I think we all know the answer to the above questions.
Clearly , Senator McCains selection of Governor Palin was a rash and unwise decision based on Politics not governance. We have had that same decision making criteria for 8 years. ENOUGH !

I heard a caller this morning on the Diane Rehm Show on NPR ask the same questions. I started listening to the conversation late, so I'm not certain who her guest were, but the McCain supporter (I think he was a Minnesota Congressman) reiterated that conservatives continue to be supportive of Bristol's choice to raise the baby and marry the father and that they would react in kind to a similar situation if that had happened to a Democrat. I think the key to his response was that conservatives admire Bristol's choice to keep the baby and refute that her behavior is any more a reflection on the Palins' parenting skills than anyone else's children who disobey their parents. I tend to believe, however, that if a Democrat were in a similar situation, the focus would be on the candidate's values and inability to control his/her household, rather than the morality of the daughter's choice to keep the baby.
The guest who was an Obama supporter said he would hope that regardless of party, respect of the daughter's privacy would be observed.
Additionally, the question of the Alaskan secession came up during the show as well and the McCain supporter said that although he does not know exactly how she was affiliated with the party and its ideals, that her involvement and complacency with Alaskan secession was comparable to Obama's affiliation with Reverend Wright. Luckily, Rehm stopped that ridiculous argument dead in its tracks by explaining how being a member of a party and publicly endorsing its ideas is different than being an audience member to an occasionally controversial speaker whose views are his own.

Oh Puhlease!!! Obama was not just an audience member at Wright's loony 'church', he publicly called him his mentor, wrote a book with the title of one of Wrights sermons, spent 20 years associating with him. Nice try at minimizing that. Also a nice try at claiming your attacks on her children would be (you know this how?) also done by republicans if the situation were reversed. This is the childish defense of, 'well, they would do it too!!' that a 6 year old might use.
