Memo To McCain. September 11, 20011 May Have Halted NYC Dem Mayoral Primary Vote, But...

September 11, 2001 Did Not Stop The New York City Mayoral Election.

Why Should McCain Suspend His Campaign Or Ditch Any Debates?

Unless he, like Sarah Palin, is simply not ready for a demanding job that requires alert and calm multitasking in a heated environment. He can't hide behind the lobbyists forever.

I was thinking about how the worst terrorist attack our country endured affected New York City's election.

And except for a primary vote, not really.

And except for campaign coverage being eclipsed by 9/11 related coverage, not really.

So if there's a reason for a suspension of a campaign, it's not an emergency  like this. (And the $700 billion isn't even related to anything!!!)

New York City proceeded with its mayoral election after September 11, 2001. Only a democratic primary vote that same day was canceled. There was a Mayoral primary debate set for Sunday, September 9th. The next debate would have been a primary runoff 'if neded' scheduled for Wednesday, October 3.

Rudy Giuliani wanted to extend his term, New Yorkers will remember. He pushed hard for it, citing the attack, a claimed need for a smoother transition...and perhaps there was also an ego boosting popularity going on too.

That time was absolutely the best and worst of Rudy,” said Frederick A. O. Schwarz Jr., the city’s former corporation counsel under Mayor Edward I. Koch. “Rudy stood up strong and rallied us. But that confidence created the very dangerous idea that we couldn’t survive without him.”

Mark Green, the democratic challenger, was at one point, ahead. Until he made some major errors, like supporting Rudy's power grab. He lost by two points, 49 to 47%.

Still, the difficulty in trying to assess this election was evident in the voice of David Axelrod, Mr. Ferrer's media consultant...

Don't know what it did in other parts of the country, Washington D.C. in particular. Most important fact? The system kept moving. The Mayoral election did happen on time, and Michael Bloomberg became mayor of NYC.
