Do you think Colin Powell Has Made Up His Mind Yet?
In reading through comments over at Time's Swampland, I was directed to this article on an ABC News blog referencing a quote from Kissinger, which ended with a statement from Powell indicating that he would make up his mind about which candidate he was endorsing after the debates:
So, after each of the candidates laid out their approaches to foreign policy - areas where they're in basic agreement and where they differ, where do you think Powell would fall? Is he more likely to support McCain or Obama, if you were to judge simply on compatibility of philosophy and policy?
While there was little direct talk about the presidential campaign itself, Madeleine Albright reiterated her endorsement of Barak Obama. Jim Baker expressed his support for John McCain. When asked who he is supporting, Colin Powell said he has great respect for both candidates but he's waiting to watch the debates before he makes up his mind.http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/kissinger-backs.html

I think Colin Powell has been leaning Obama for quite some time. The administration kind of cherry-picked his doctrine for the "overwhelming force" parts and ignored the larger diplomatic context. McCain isn't any different.
Powell is moving slowly for some reason. Obama is a MASTER at holding back endorsement announcements until he wants to change the media narrative. If that's the case, Colin Powell is a nuclear bomb. I think he'll endorse near the end of the campaign unless Obama gets into trouble.

He will say he endorses who he is told to say he endorses.

According to his son he may never endorse anybody and just vote as private citizen.

Based on his cryptic comments and the clear pain in his eyes - he appears to carry the burden of Iraq on his shoulders - I believe he will vote for Obama, but he's a very private man and may never speak of it.
I also believe that Condi is going to vote for Obama - she's been making cryptic comments also, absolutely hates McCain and is appalled by the selection of Palin.

I no longer care what Powell thinks. He made the decisive arguments swaying public opinion in favor of attacking Iraq. What else, after nearly 2 years of campaigning by both candidates, does Powell still need to see to make up his mind?

Stop given so much power to General Powell. He long ago squandered his moral authority, by not take a stand when it counted, to keep the War Mongers from taking us into Iraq.
What good would his endorsement do Obama, now. He is the nominee, and he is leading in the polls.
All the right wing talk radio creeps would attack Powell for just selling out, just on the basis of race.
Obama/Biden 2008
Keep focused on the ticket. Powell sold his soul to Bush, and has never even tried to buy it back.
I want no association with him.

I have my problems with Powell, as well, but his endorsement would certainly carry some weight with undecided Independent voters, as well as with some Leaning McCains who could be persuaded to vote Obama.
I tend to think that Obama's foreign policy positions are compatible with Powell's philosophies. Don't know if Powell has the courage to come out and publicly endorse him. Given his past behavior - he's been a Party man, much to my disappointment. It would be awesome if he would prove otherwise.
