Can A Maverick Lead?
The question that must be raised by supporters of Barack Obama is, "can John McCain lead his own party, much less working across the isle?"
In the wake of the failure of the majority of Republicans to back a Republican proposal, proffered by a Republican President, and backed by the Republican Party's own Presidential Nominee, John McCain, who as we all know "suspended" his campaign to ensure the passage of this legislation to stave off economic disaster, how can anyone expect that John McCain can lead the his own party much less reform it?
Has John McCain's self advertised Maverick persona so alienated his Republican colleagues, has his demeanor and temperament

caused McCain to be ineffective not only with Democrats but within his own party.

You know, that's crossed my mind a number of times lately as I've watched this generally respected Senator lurch around like a schoolboy. Being of a literal turn of mind, I keep thinking that a real 'maverick' -- unbranded calf that doesn't belong with any herd -- is not and cannot be a leader.

This has crossed my mind--not simply in response to this crisis, but in general. I do believe that it's important in this election, as it apparently has not been in the last two, to appeal to those in the middle of the political spectrum. But that alone will not lead to good government. The president does need to have one of the two political parties behind him, at least in essentials. McCain has run so much as a "maverick" against his own party, that I've sometimes wondered whether that would be possible for him.
