Why does McCain want the Spotlight?

I certainly have to give credit to McCain for this: He got people talking. There has basically been an unbroken thread on Sarah Palin for the last 24 hours on TPM, probably everywhere else as well. But here's the thing I don't get about this. McCain may have made this move to "shake things up" or to steal the media spotlight from Obama. But why? Shining the spotlight on McCain is not good for him. He should know that. He had this election setting up pretty nicely as a referendum on Obama. Every grenade he lobbed had the talking heads chattering. And, as we all know, Obama was not benefitting from that chatter. Maybe the convention changed the calculus and McCain's people decided that if it's a referendum on Obama, they are going to lose because he's just got too much firepower. Whatever the reason, McCain has got the spotlight on himself now and suddenly this looks more like a referendum on Palin. Beside the obvious fact that she is not prepared to be president - even the McCain campaign admitting as much - we're going to have to "get to know" Palin and all the radical right wing positions she has. McCain's "hidden" policy agenda will now get exposed to the light of day, and all the ways that Palin either agrees or doesn't agree with them (I imagine before long she will agree with them). McCain and Palin will also have to answer the question of how it is that these positions - essentially the same as Bush as Obama has been saying - really constitute anything remotely resembling "reform" or "change". In a nutshell, it seems to me all the work that the McCain campaign had done to define Obama as a celebrity, as an empty suit, as being not ready to lead, etc, is flushed down the toilet and suddenly, it is the McCain/Palin ticket that looks like the less experienced, more risky choice in this election.
Is McCain crazy like a fox, or just plain crazy?

I think he's desperate. He had a ceiling at about 45 percent. The Democratic unity coming out of the convention was going to solidify that. Obama is too strong a politician for them to be able to count on a major screw-up or passive response to their attacks. Biden represented a solid, safe VP pick who didn't give them many openings. They had to try something different to shake things up.

Good post. I certain hope this does put more focus on McCain's "hidden" policy agenda. We shall see. Perhaps this is a blessing.

Your last paragraph captures my thoughts and feelings exactly. I'm baffled. I expect "evil genius" moves from the Republicans -- but I'm struggling to figure this one out......

Some astute observers have noted that Palin shores up fundamentalist and right wing support who might be wholeheartledly for McCain's hidden agenda.

Palin is a fresh face and outdoors woman who believes global warming is not caused by humans. I guess this plays well in some circles.

The McCain campaign can now say they have both an avowedly conservative and "reformist" or mavericky ticket.

Of course, the Right is happy.

But with such unknown as Palin, the discovery process with happen in the national spotlight. McCain has been trying to keep those "inconvenient" policy positions out of the public eye.

The way that this could backfire big time is that as they discuss her positions on all the social issues, the rest of the country (the non-social conservatives) basically say, yeah Obama is right. This is more of the same.

I hope their logic was as simple as trying to make the conservative base happy while hoping to appear progressive at the same time.

If that's it, they are going down in flames. It just seems there would have been "safer" choices to accomplish those objectives.

I'm thinking that the numbers the McCain campaign were looking at were not as close as some in the media have been reporting. This pick reeks of desperation.

Before McCain made his pick, the thinking was that he would have to pick someone to help him with the economy. How Palin helps McCain with the economy or any other issue is beyond me.

She does want to open up historically protected ares to more drilling. Being from Alaska , she has bona fide drill-happy credentials. My understanding is that that's a popular position among the public (and not only in Alaska).
