McCain's Obama Bashing.... Will It Work?

When the "flip flopper" narrative was used by the Republicans against John Kerry in August 2004 it was effective as we all know, but why?  I believe that it was effective because when the masses started paying more attention in September, they saw a guy in Kerry that pretty much looked like the guy that Republicans said he was.  It was effective because to the casual observer it seemed like a pretty good description.

This however is why I have strong hope that McCain's August attacks on Obama won't have the same effect.  I believe that when the fall campaign starts and the general public watches the conventions & even more so the debates; they aren't going to see an empty suit "celebrity".  What McCain is actually doing is lowing the publics' expectations for Obama which we all know he is more than ready to outshine.

I also don't believe that the "empty celebrity" charge is as hard to overcome as "flip flopper".  To combat a flip flop charge you have to go back and defend particular Senate votes which most people will just tune out anyway.  But to combat an empty charge, one must only demonstrate that they are not empty.  Obviously we still have a long way to go over the next 2 1/2 months but I think we are in for a series of small but meaningful bounces over the next couple months.

In addition, I think the public was waiting to see Kerry fight for his honor against those smears. He did not. The vacuum in responding is what really did the damage, I think. Kerry didn't seem to take those attacks seriously until it was too late.

The anxiety of many regarding Barack's response to the McCain smears is that it feels too much like Kerry's mistake.

As McCain tries the usual GOP painting of the Democrat as weak and indecisive it would seem that the last thing Barack can afford is to reinforce that distortion by appearing weak and indecisive in his response.

Well, and Obama needs to start some media narrative HIMSELF, that McCain has to answer to.
LBJ had a saying that even if you know an accusation is false, make the other guy DENY it. I'm not advocating that, per se, but making McCain go on the defensive a bit...

I hope the "he doesn't know how many houses he owns" meme gets some traction. In fact, when people are LOSING theirs, it ought to get ALOT of traction...

LBJ had a saying that even if you know an accusation is false, make the other guy DENY it.

LBJ did it a bit more colorfully though, at least the way the story is remembered:

he called his equally depressed campaign manager and instructed him to call a press conference for just before lunch on a slow news day and accuse his high-riding opponent, a pig farmer, of having routine carnal knowledge of his barnyard sows, despite the pleas of his wife and children.

His campaign manager was shocked. "We can’t say that, Lyndon," he supposedly said. "You know it’s not true."

"Of course it’s not true!" Johnson barked at him. "But let’s make the bastard deny it!"
