Hillary Clinton's Political Career Is Over

Okay, not her political career as a Senator. As far as I know.

But she might as well hang up her aspirations ever to be the Democratic nominee for President. And for that she can thank her PUMA-like supporters, who have apparently decided to toss her career onto the funeral pyre of their rage at Sen. Obama.

God I hate belonging to this party. Is there a progressive party somewhere that doesn't have the Clintons in it, or anyone like them?

Which reminds me -- Anderson Cooper just referred to "Bill Clinton supporters." Bill Clinton's got supporters? What the hell for?

Great. Helpful.
Unity, as long as you do it our way; change, as long as its only the change we want. Don't question, don't be disappointed, don't care. Don't be loyal to a candidate you believed in. just do as we say. You lost, we won, now shut the hell up.
Great.

Screw you. My God, Obama has bent over backwards for Hillary Clinton. She and her worthless husband both have speeches, she gets her name put into the nominating process, the Florida and Michigan delegations get full votes, and on and on and on and on and ...

And is that enough? F**k no. Not a day goes by that either the Hillary camp or Bill or the PUMAs or some combination thereof aren't offended and aggrieved about something.

I bet you expect that next time Hillary has a chance to run the party will just fall into line behind her.

Well tell me this: Why the f**k should we do that? Hillary supporters are now out to destroy Sen. Obama's chances. You think that's all gonna be forgotten?

The PUMAs are single-issue twist-offs, just like the antiabortion far right, but with even less integrity. They have sacrificed their integrity, their political individuality, and any principles they might once have had in a self-destructive orgy of idolatry for the Golden Calf of American politics.

These walking character disorders will be around until a woman attains the office of President. I doubt that woman will be Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is less qualified and far less deserving than many women in politics, unless you view the presidency as something that should be awarded as "heart balm" damages for enduring a faithless marriage with a worthless scumbag.

"Don't be loyal to a candidate you believed in."

The candidate you believed in says she wants you to support Obama. If this were really about you being loyal to your candidate you'd be doing exactly that.

O for the love of heaven - what is the matter with y'all?

Can't you grow up? We don't always get what we want but damn, I thought we were all in this together, trying to get things right in this country after these last nightmare years. I didn't want Joe Biden as Veep - but since I got him anyway, I've decided it's great, since there are big damn fucking problems we have to solve and who exactly is the Veep doesn't matter at all - solving them does.

It's a hell of disappointment to me that y'all are so intransigent and immature about this that you refuse to join us in trying to fix what's wrong - you just want your way .

Must suck to be you considering how rarely any of us really get what it is we think we want.

"Our way" won. Unity does not mean a do-over. Grow the fork up.

go to hell with your snark....you people are not interested in unity unless it has clinton somewhere on the ticket...dems are a bunch of losers and as soon as this election is over, i am divorcing this stupid party....the ideals are great, but we lose b/c we are losers...why else would PUMA and embittered clintons and clinton supporters still exist? they exist b/c we love losing...republicans are not in love with mccain, but they have enough sense not to undermine him in favor of huckabee, or romney or guiliani etc.....what's done is done.

obama loses, clintons will get blamed period...she runs in 2012 and she will get exactly what obama supporters got in 2008-NADA....the knife cuts both ways...do what is right today and your political ass will be saved later...if she wasn't so arrogant and she had taken the time to formulate a succint path to winning the primaries, instead of acting entitled and dismissing the jr senator, she would have been the presumptive nominee and all of Obama's supporters would have fallen in line...she failed even though she had all the advantages...get over it already! the clintons are not God...the times have changed...we thank B. Clinton for his good work, but unfortunately all of it has been overshadowed by his colorful past and his philandering ways....spare us all the rhetoric....there is no guarantee that bill c would have been able to do what he did back in had hrc been president...

for clarification, independent party or no affiliation at all is looking better and better everyday..

Boy howdy. I second that.

A footnote to a history lesson about the NMC party, 50 years hence:

"Ironically, it was Sen. Hillary Clinton's historic run for the Democratic nominee for the Presidency that marked the beginning of the end of the Democratic party. Sen. Clinton, who went on to lose her bid for re-election to the Senate, never held public office again. The Democratic party was eventually replaced by the NMC party. 'NMC', which now stands for 'New Middle Class,' originally stood for 'No More Clintons.'"

I will send money to a primary opponent for Her Royal Cryness.

Yeah yeah, its not like this hasn't happened before and worse.

"Ironically, it was Sen. Ed Kennedy's historic run for the Democratic nominee for the Presidency that marked the beginning of the end of the Democratic party. Sen. Kennedy, who went on to lose his bid for re-election to the Senate, never held public office again."

I have no doubt that Hillary will be consigned to the same oblivion as Ed Kennedy, be looked at with the same opprobrium and at the end of her life be viewed with the same ignominy that Kennedy is today.

user-pic

Senator Kennedy challenged the incumbent president of his own party.

Hillary was challenging a fellow senator.

But no, according to his cult followers the Messiah msut not be challenged. Hillary should have dropped out and allowed the Messiah to be coronated with a fight.

You guys are in for a rude awakening. Hillary treated your Messiah with kid gloves. You are about to find out what a real election fight looks like.

user-pic

What is it with all of the Clinton hatred in this thread? Or, more to the point, the hatred towards the people who voted for Clinton? You know, on a straight count of votes, Obama and Clinton are basically equally popular with the party, based on what we know from the primaries. No doubt that Obama won, by the way, but by a rounding error.

And yet Obama picks Biden who opposed him in the primaries and got trounced and that's okay? Especially given that Obama used Hillary's Iraq vote against her during the primary even though Biden voted for the war too?

At this point, other than being a Democrat, what is Obama bringing to the table? We get faith based initiatives, the FISA bill, bigoted anti-gay singers at campaign events and... Joe Biden?

Here you are, arguing that Democrats who critize Obama are the problem. Show me one thing that Obama has changed about himself in order to win the votes of Democrats who weren't for him from the start. The guy didn't win the nomination with any sort of mandate -- the votes were neck and neck -- so he still has a lot of work to do within our own party and I don't see any evidence that he's done it, or that he's even tried.

user-pic

YOU are the problem, destor. You and PUMAs like you. This thread is in response to her sending out Begala and Carville to flog the "Obama dissed Hillary" message. The Clinton drama continues.

And no, Obama didn't win by rounding. Obama won straight out. The fact that you are still promoting this lie is part of the problem.

user-pic

Wow, you're actually nuts, aren't you?

I'm no PUMA, by the way. And yes, Obama won but it was pretty damned close when you count actual votes and all that means is that Hillary had a heck of a lot of support, some of which has lingered.

And I think it's funny that you think the siting Senator of New York's political career is over and that you take such seeming delight in it all over, what comments by Paul Begala? Whatevs.

user-pic

What Clinton hatred? Can you never ever tell the truth? Do you always have to catapault things into something they aren't, just like the GOP?

Nobody is hating on the Clintons - but if we aren't bowing, scraping, kissing their asses - you always say we are hating on them.

Jesus.

user-pic

I bet you guys don't have any problem with Ted Kennedy as a loyal Democrat.

He challenged the incumbent president of his own party. He refused to concede even though he had half the votes of the incumbent president. Took the fight to the convention floor. Forced a floor fight. Pretty much refused to endorse the incumbent president of his own party. Refused to campaign for him.

And yet you guys probably think of him as a loyal Democrat.

Why the double standard for Hillary? Because she challenged The One? the Messiah? the Prescious who must never be challenged?

Hillary endorse the One in record time, four days after the primaries ended. That is less time than it took Gary Hart to concede. She has raised money for him, endorsed him, released her delegates. And yet it is not enough. Nothing is good enough for the Messiah. She ought to go on national TV and apologize for having run against the Messiah in the first place.

The sexism and misogyny in this place shocking.

user-pic

Destor is not the problem. The problem is the ego of Bill Clinton who seems to be trying to take out his revenge against his own impeachment on his own party. Bill honey, we stood by your side and prevented you from being kicked out of office, now sweetie, get over yourself. Your time is past. How many times are you going to try to destroy your wife's life?

And PUMA feminists if you are really feminists would you please tell Bill to go to hell?

And I would add that marriages typically consist of two individuals whose mental health, whether good or bad, is about even. So I don't doubt that he has endured plenty himself.

Just look at them.

"Or, more to the point, the hatred towards the people who voted for Clinton?"

Why, you ask? Because those reality-deniers still want to vote for HRC and, locked into their desperate and brittle fantasy, will want to keep on voting for her forever, no matter what the outcome based on previously-agreed-upon rules. That's called infantilism.

That's why so many people here say to the HRC idolators, "Grow up."

Biden has atoned for his war vote by admitting error and going into opposition. HRC is absolutely incapable of admitting error, and continues to lie about her actions at the time, see the "Levin Amendment." Uncannily like GWB.

Man, What the hell do you want, for Obama to go to your house and watch your kids for the night?

Get over it, Clinton is an ex-president. Hillary has never done anything other than cover her own ass. She got the senate seat to NY, a place she has never lived and would never have won if she was not married to a former pres. She is an empty pantsuit and I am sick of all this forced deference given to her. She had all the advantages from the start of the primaries; money, donor base, loyalty, insider track, and media coverage. She followed that up with a weak message, no central theme, and a generally whining additude. Get over it. Either vote for a dottering old man with untreated PTSD and a finger on the button or quit complaining and get with the program, Obama is better than McCain. This may not be your dream choice but put your little pink unicorn pillow down and man up for a change.

If you are looking for a love note from Barack before you vote for him, be prepared for Johnny Mac's drool cup runething over on you.

Oh yeah, and start saving up for the body armour your going to have to get your kid after he gets drafted.

Obama had the most assholes behind him, the decisive advantage.

Ka-drill.

user-pic

"Hillary has never done anything other than cover her own ass."

And the Messiah? What has he done?

Oh yes, he was a "community organizer".

"Bill Clinton's got supporters? What the hell for?"

To keep his testicular fortitude from chafing.

Come on. There are like 30 PUMAs. You buying into the republican effort to play up the Obama dissing of Sen. Clinton at not being selected as his running mate.

I am no fan of either Clinton, for the record.

Clinton has announced she will release her delegates on Wed. and has urged her supporters to support Obama.

I think you would be more accurate to say that the era of DLC dominance of the democratic party is over.

user-pic

Did the Republicans send Begala and Carville out to talk up the "Obama dissed Hillary" message?

user-pic

I never go for this notion that campaigns send operatives to stir up trouble in websites. This post makes me reconsider. I'm serious. Why would anyone who wants to win in November write this post at this time? Seriously. Is it just me, or could this person being doing the work of Senator McCain? I mean this is the first full day of the convention. Why now?

user-pic

Quote: "Is it just me, or could this person being doing the work of Senator McCain? I mean this is the first full day of the convention. Why now?"

Because it was just last night that Paul Begala and James Carville were on CNN flogging their "Obama dissed Hillary" story. And just this morning that politico reported Bill Clinton's unhappiness with the topic of his speech.

If it'll make you feel any better, I've decided to the extent possible to ignore what the Hillary supporters are putting out there. I've probably done all the pushback I can from my keyboard. But I did want Hillary supporters to know that pushback is out there. Frankly, I think some of them still -- at this late date -- are looking for what they are willing -- make that EAGER -- to interpret as indications that the tide is turning on Obama.

The Politico (read: RNC newsletter) and the McCain camp has been pushing this meme.

Caveat empor. The MSM is in the tank. The GOP wants to divide and conquer.

I just hope the Hillary supporters don't end up overturnign Roe v. Wade. Think of all those maimed and dead young women. The next Pres. will likely pick a couple SC justices. Only one more rightwing nut and it's over for a generation.

I just wonder if the girls who will die are worth it -- worth not swallowing some pride, not being team players, not getting over a loss. If the tables were turned, I certainly would value the lives that will be lost.

Bottomline: Bush has killed thousands of Americans. McCain will kill thousands more.
My conscience will be clear that I did everything humanly possible to prevent this.

You can not count Hillary out for the future.

Politics has a way of surprising us all. If Obama does not win, then it will be Hillary versus Biden in 2012.

Nixon got elected as a two term President, after he had actually counted himself out. Recall his famous remark about not having him to kick around anymore.

user-pic

Oh I'm not counting her out. I'm just pissed at the moment. And, in between moments like this one, I actually feel pretty agreeable toward Hillary. (I would've been okay with her as VP pick.)

But Carville and Begala on CNN "explaining" how Obama "mishandled" the VP pick was inexcusable. Just inexcusable. And I still think she could've stopped it.

I was fine with Begala and Carville when the primaries were still on and they were Clinton surrogates. But their behavior last night? Despicable.

Carville and Begala are freelancing. They have to self promote for the next four years. Hillary no longer has any control over what the do or say now. Those two are saying what the think will stir up some controversy, in order to make sure that they get to continue with their TV gigs.

They are not saying what Hillary wants them to say. They are saying what their TV masters want from them.

Lynn, they're both asshat has-beens who are paid to act like they're still in the loop and to stir up shit. I am 100% confident that they didn't call her beforehand and say "hey Hill, we're planning on sayin Obama mishandled the veep selection, you okay wit dat?" And I am equally confident that once their mouths were running on live TV, there was no way Hillary could have stopped it.

Libertarian Party doesn't have PUMAs or Clintons.

It also doesn't have the American Idol-like prime-time TV drama that makes this election so captivating.

user-pic

It also has no scruples, no understanding of our constitution, our democratic republic, or any fucking clue what it means to be human beings cause we ain't solo hunters - we are a social, cooperative species and Libertarians don't believe in cooperation.

No More Drama...they remind me of my alcoholic parents.

All right little misters and misses, I'll turn this car around and take us right back home!

Its really time for people on both sides of this ridiculous squabbling to stop attributing statement by every supporter--even high level surrogates, to Bill or Hillary or Barack. The idea that Bill or Hillary or Barack have that degree of control over what their supporters (present and former, real and imagined) do and say that's being imputed to them here today is absolutely ridiculous.

In fact, just this moment, what with it being THE FIRST DAY OF THE DAMN CONVENTION and all, its really time for there to stop being two sides, dontcha maybe think? If you think so, that only happens when both sides stop arguing about who started the fight, who fought dirtier, and yada yada yada ad infinitum.

Everyone on both sides of this is starting to remind me of divorcees who are so afraid of feeling nothing that they can't let go of the hate. There is no winning that fight. All they succeed in doing is creating kids who hate both of them when they take enough time away cutting themselves to think about it. And the way every new grievance opens up the floor for an extremely productive rehashing of every ancient grievance, every perceived inadequacy, every slight, every failing, and every debt dating back to the first kiss is an especially lovely point of comparison.

Fight with each other if you must, but keep it personal and keep it current because it is high time for everyone on both sides of this increasingly irrelevant debate to stop arguing that Obama and the two Clintons are responsible for the acts, words and presumed insults of every subordinate, present and pass surrogate, delegate, blogger, blog commenter, or random asshole in the street. They aren't. They don't have that level of control over them. How do I know that? BECAUSE THESE ARE DEMOCRATS WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, HERE, which, ipso facto means they're going to slip their leash and run their mouths when they should just be sitting quietly at the bar nursing a cool foamy glass of STFU.

As I observed once before, the MSM only has four stories in the summer. One of them is "oh, those silly, squabbling Democrats, observe and chortle at the disarray." They're chasing that one full bore today, like a great white on the tail of a surfer. Surely, this is one time I can suggest that we stop throwing anymore goddamn chum in the water without being accused of being a fascist.

the msm has been called liberal. it's not.

user-pic

"You won't have Hillary Clinton to kick around anymore."

May we assume she will be elected president in 2016?

The lesson that the Clinton's learned from the vast right wing is how to do the street fight thing effectively. Once you've beat them to a pulp, stomped them in the ground and made them cry, then you kick them until you hurt. Never let up! What they didn't learn is you don't bring that shit back home and use it on your own family members.

user-pic

Has it occured to anyone that most of these so-called "PUMAs" voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004? And probably voted for Dole, HW Bush, and Reagan. They were basically attracted to the novelty of the idea of voting for someone with similar genitalia. They aren't Democrats, certainly not loyal Democrats - they are women for whom the promise of a few dollars in tax cuts were sufficient reasons to abandon the party most dedicating to advancing their cause.

And some of them are probably just meatspace Republican trolls.

I've done my fair share of merciless beat-downs on the PUMAs who haunt this site, and while it feels good, it's basically useless. Because these people aren't really Democrats, and it's pointless. It's like trying to teach a pig to sing. It just wastes your time, and annoys the pig.

user-pic

Dream on.

Obama is going down to defeat in November. He will soon join McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry.

Hillary will be able to say I told you so, purge the party of the losers and run again in four years like Reagan did after 1976.

user-pic

Quote: "Hillary will be able to say I told you so, purge the party of the losers and run again in four years like Reagan did after 1976."

Yeah, well, unlike Reagan in 1976, Hillary has created enough bad feeling that she'll be lucky if she gets re-elected to the Senate, never mind gets the party's nomination for President.

user-pic

"Yeah, well, unlike Reagan in 1976, Hillary has created enough bad feeling that"

How old are you? 12?

Were you around in 1976?

Reagan challenged the incumbent president of his party all the way to the convention and refused to campaign for him. Yeah there were "bad feelings".

user-pic

Yes, I was around in 1976 and I was old enough to vote.

user-pic

The PUMAs prove one thing: you don't have to be a Republican to act against your self-interest. Democrats, too, can be dumb as dirt.

Hey folks, let's calm down a little.

First, Hillary is supporting Obama. The press is claiming she's not but so far she is.

Second, she and Bill will give speeches tomorrow and Wed. Why not wait until then to decide if they are committed or not??

Third, the PUMAs seem like a fringe group. With an election involving tens of millions, a few hundred people are basically insignificant.

But like I said, we'll see what Hillary and Bill do. Hopefully they'll put this to rest. If they do it well, it will backfire on the MSM/GOP which were pushing the meme. Balls in HRC & WJC's court. Let's see what they do.

I do agree that if Hillary undermines Obama and he loses, she will surely be blamed by some people, and that will torpedo her political future. An Obama victory with her help, conversely, will make her next in line for the presidency. Biden is probably to old to run for Pres. after 8 years. Hillary will be 68 then I believe, but women live longer than men. She could very well run in 2016. (And if god forbid, something happened, 2012). My point is, being a good DNC soldier virtually guarantees her a future nomination. She's not stupid. I'm sure she knows all of this.

Pathetic.

user-pic

PUMAs... anyone who believes they are a movement needs to get a grip with reality. Oh, right, they have a website. This is the latest incarnation of Office Park Dads, Nascar Dads, Values Voters or whatever the media, and in this case the tin-foil hat wearing HRC haters, have to come up with to make it interesting. Take a deep breath folks. PUMAs will not affect any election. Period. They dont exist except in your mind.

Quite a troll fest here.

Hillary's got a great chance here to do something good. That means not making her speech about her disruptive "supporters" or the important schismist "voice" that they supposedly represent, or the "glass ceiling" that didn't hold back the Speaker of the House (with the directly implied false accusation that that holds).

It needs to be a speech about winning together to put the disgraceful Bush legacy in a coffin. And it needs to be heartfelt and passionate, not wistful or grudging. And not in between, either, as we've seen so many times. She's had a lot of chances to do this and has just let them slip. This is one more great opportunity for her, the most important. To squander, or to make a difference. All eyes are upon her.

STALWARTS FOR CLINTON, IN SEARCH OF CATHARSIS

“I’m going to the convention because I want to see Hillary,” Ms. Buell said in an interview. “I want to be inspired by her, encouraged by her to do what’s going to be the best thing for all of our futures. She’s trying to help us all get through this.”

* * *

“I don’t think that Senator Obama understands how deep this commitment goes to Hillary, and where this passion comes from,” said Ms. Buell, co-founder of the clothing company Esprit. She stopped short of saying she would vote for Mr. Obama in November, but added: “I’m also a very, very devoted Democrat, so this is a very hard situation. John McCain is unacceptable.”

* * *

Mr. Obama’s advisers say there are two kinds of Clinton supporters that he must win over. The first are those, like Ms. Buell, who are more affluent and educated, devoted to causes like abortion rights and universal health care. As liberal Democrats, they may be easiest to reach when the alternative is a Republican who opposes abortion rights, would probably name more justices to the Supreme Court who feel the same and supports the war in Iraq.

The other, larger group includes older, less-educated, working-class women — and some men — who embraced the populist economic message that Mrs. Clinton hit hard in the final months of her campaign. They are a tougher audience, Mr. Obama’s advisers say.

Jane Quinn, a 50-year-old teacher and Oregon delegate for Mrs. Clinton, said: “It’s not really Hillary’s job to bring the party together. It’s Obama’s job.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/26/us/politics/26women.html?ref=us

The effect that HRC and her now pathetic husband have had on this election is clear. The opposing party does not have to come up with a single smear against Obama - they are simply re-stating and re-packaging all of the crap the Clintons threw at him in the primary. Regardless of the outcome of this election, I sincerely hope that the Clintons are finished. They clearly care only about their own egos.

user-pic

So you are saying that McCain campaign on its own would not have figured out that Obama is inexperienced and not qualified to be commander in chief? They stole the idea from Hillary's campaing?

You are awfully naive.

And I guess you had no problem with Obama smearing the Clintons as racists.

Obama is the nominee. Hillary has done her duty and endorsed him. The rest is up to him. His name will be on the ballot, not Hillary's.

user-pic

Of course the McCain camp would've figured out these attacks on their own. But wasn't it just delicious of Hillary to provide them with videoclips of the attacks coming out of her mouth? And doesn't that just give the attacks a delightful zip and zing?!

user-pic

But you don't seem to have any objection to Biden saying The Messiah isn't ready to be president. McCain is running ads using Biden's words.

Why the double standard?

The reason she would never win in 2012 is because WE as Obama supporters would not forget. We aren't that petty but there would be many that would vote for everyone that wasn't Hillary. I would have voted for her if she had gotten the SD's to s witch their vote in her favor. I just detest McCain that much, HOWEVER if her supporters aid in a loss come this election, shit will hit the fan.
