Report Suspicious Activity!
I thought I was being paranoid, but my husband has noticed this, too: in the last couple of weeks we have been seeing an increase in the number of "Report Suspicious Activity" signs here in Maryland. Being close to DC, this might just be a local phenomenon, so I was wondering what people are seeing in other parts of the country.
I am really tired of the "Be afraid" version of politics the Republicans have been shoving down our throuts for the last 8 years. My one hope is that it won't work this time and they will have to come up with a new game plan. Probably won't be any better, but at least there'd be some variety.

Such things are driven by our friendly Dept of Homeland Security. Gearing up their PR campaign and building their momentum for November, no doubt.

It really is time to begin floating this meme: Any terrorist attack between now and the election is nothing other than another utter failure of the present administration and those failures will be continued and worsened by its presumptive heir apparent, John McCain.

The climate of fear you refer to is, in a sense, unnecessary. Heightened alertness will in all likelihood avail nothing in the way of prevention.
Suppose lightning hit a small town's field of softball players in the midst of a game, sending several to the hospital. The village then bans all further softball games. Or perhaps puts up signs everywhere warning people to constantly scan the sky for ominous clouds. Or searches everyone purchasing seats at further games, to see if they are carrying metallic objects that might draw another bolt down from the sky.
And maybe there are no further bolts in the field. "Ah, our preventive measures worked!"
Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Haven't seen any of those fearmonger signs in So. Cal., but we have cameras, EVERYWHERE!
