A Small Tale of Hope (from Last Night's Rally)

I didn't get into the rally at the Xcel Energy Center last night in St. Paul.  Didn't even get close.  The line snaked through downtown St. Paul for what looked like miles.  We finally decided to drop out of the line and follow it to the auditorium just to see what we'd been up against.  Insurmountable odds would be an accurate description.  A capacity crowd of nearly 20,000 people listened to Obama from inside the auditorium.  Another 15,000 stood outside and listened.  Once we'd established that there was no way we were going to get in, we opted for slices and beers at Cossetta, and then went to a friend's place to watch things on TV.

While we stood in line, I struck up a conversation with an African-American family that was ahead of us.  It was a guy, his wife, and his son and daughter.  The son looked to be about 7 or 8, and the daughter was a little younger.  As I spoke with their father, he stood with one hand on the shoulder of each of his kids.  They were all dressed up, and very excited to be there.  I asked him: "Are you excited?"  He said, "Oh, yeah.  Unbelievable.  I've never seen anything like this."  I told him that I'd seen Obama in Portland and that it was an amazing scene there too.  He asked me if I'd been an Obama supporter for long.  I said, "Practically since I saw him at the 2004 convention.  I've never been so excited about a candidate in my entire life."  He said, "Me too."  Then he patted his kids on the shoulders and said, "I'm so happy for them.  Unlike me and their Mom, they'll never need to wonder if something like this is possible."

This is about so much more than an election.

For me, it is also about much more than the individual stories. It is what it says about US.

Early in the campaign, I found the ad nauseum positing of the question "Is America ready for a black (gasp!) candidate/President?" incredibly disheartening. I kept thinking, why is this what we're asking? Why are we still here, stuck in this kind of thinking?

Of course, I realize that not everyone is "ready." But WE are ready. We have managed to pay attention to what matters, to decipher content, to be critical and reflect. We have heard the truth and we have listened.

After years of sensationalism and sound-bites, I wasn't sure we remembered how. As I have written before, it isn't just Obama's politics that appeal to me (and make me weep like a baby), it's his faith in the American people and his courage to trust that we will do the right thing. Wow.

Absolutely agreed. And I didn't mention this in the post, but when he told me why he was happy for his kids, I had to excuse myself for a moment. Apparently, there was something in my eye...

That's a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it.

Thank you for taking the time to read it, Ms. Phoebe.

One of the most beautiful moments of last night was after Obama's speech, after he had done the rope tour and was heading out of the arena proper. An Obama-of-tomorrow boy -- seven or eight? -- was hanging over the railing right by the door. Obama saw him, stopped, reached up, rubbed his head and then... put his hand along the boy's face, tenderly, for a long time. I wept. It was not for show. It was just Obama, still able to be moved. And a boy, who will never forget that moment. Not captured in still photos, but there are some photos that show the boy right before OBama noticed him.Yes We Can.

I heard on CNN that there was apparently a point in the evening where some Obama supporter reached over and, instead of shaking Obama's hand, rubbed his head. We love this guy. He's gonna be the first really cool president we've had in a long, long time.
