Clinton did not "transform" into a working-class hero

The NYT covered Clinton's "metamorphosis" as if it was her new spring fashion. Are they oblivious to what Senator Clinton has been accomplishing all these years?
Example:  The Sununu/ Clinton Child Car Safety Actpassed in February.Bet you didn't know about it.  Because MSM didn'tfind it worth mentioning.
Here is just one more, of many things we can thankHillary Clinton for.

"In the Senate, Hillary introduced the Nursing Education and Quality of Care Act, which would expand the number of programs that address nursing faculty shortages and increase the supply of nurses in rural areas. As part of the Nurse Reinvestment Act, she helped create grants that expanded nurse Magnet hospitals. Hillary also supported increased funding for both Title VII and Title VIII, which help to address the higher education needs of nurses and nursing faculty. Finally, she has supported programs to attract nurses to the field, including efforts to improve the quality of the working environment for nurses."

Thanking Senator Clinton for her good service on behalf of the working-class does not preclude anyone questioning her recent pandering.

Any thoughts besides a cliched, over-used
buzzword?
Obama doesn't pander to the wealthy?

Two votes? But she has a lot more votes that have negatively impacted working class people. Personally, I think "metamorphasis" is too nice a word. It assumes that there's a full body alignment. With Clinton, you know that her new 2 week old "Man Act" is...just words.

Don't forget all the "jobs" she created for Americans in Iraq!

The NY Times has chronically given Senator Clinton the benefit of the doubt. The headline presumes that she has actually made that transformation.

Note that the headline for the Obama article embeds several criticisms of him: "Tagged as Elitist, Obama Shifts from High-Flown to Folksy."

The Clinton headline is "With Right Props and Stops, Clinton Transforms Into Working Class Hero." The headline acknowledges that this is all theater, but there's no suggestion that that is a bad thing. In fact, rather than "Folksy," she's a hero.

Add to this a flattering article about Bill's work in NC (with no accompanying article about Michelle Obama) and you have a paper that is clearly pushing its hometown candidate.

It would be easy to do this on the last five days of coverage.

I don't think there is any doubt that Mrs. Clinton devoted her life to advocating on behalf of children and families. Poor families, middle income families and rich families. It doesn't matter. She deserves plenty of credit and respect for that and, by and large she gets it.

What most people can't stomach is the affectation of pretending to be just like the regular folks. drinking shots and a beer, shooting guns, riding around in pickup trucks. Give us a break.

Bill was clearly equal part intellectual powerhouse, part political genius, part redneck. When he sneaked off into McDonald's it was because he liked the stuff, not because he wanted to show us he knew how use the Big Mac carton as a holder for his fries.

By contrast Mrs. Clinton who has lived in the State house, the White House and Chappaqua Manor fro the last 30 years, never sneaks off for a hunting trip, or to go have drinks with her buddies down at the bar. She never pumps her own gas. Does she even drive?

It's fine for her to try to be a hero to working class people, but trying to pretend she is like the working class folks is simply not authentic and it shows.

One additional thought.

When you are an established political figure, there is always an effort by political handlers to dress the candidate down. Think Lamar Alexander's plaid shirt. John Kerry's hunting vest, George Bush's cowboy boots. They are all costumes, but they work because they already have stature.

Obama has the problem that many people are trying to create the impression that he is not established, that he is too new, of presidential stature. If he campaigns in jeans in a T-shirt, everyone will call him un-presidential. He has to wear a suit and look authoritative nearly all the time.

The fact that he has until very recently certainly drove his own car, pumped his own gas, went to the store to buy milk for his family and paid his own mortgage doesn't seem enough for the media to identify him as a regular guy. But then again he is not playing a character.

These are very smart insights. They help explain his monochrome dress and very conservative ties. And of course, one's background may have little to do with one's commitment to working people. Look at FDR who was about as patrician as they came, but he knew who needed help. I don't doubt Clinton' sincerity at all; you are right, it is the affectation that bothers me -- and the press' willingness to make that "heroic" rather than desperate.

Present, pander fits but if you prefer I take it deeper I am quite happy to discuss how Hillary's gas tax holiday proposal does not help the working class and is cynical attempt to capture votes of the uninformed. We can talk about her attacks on economists (who she touted when some endorsed her health care plan) and wall street traders (family and friends) as an effort to convince them she's on their side. Or, how her statements on Iran and OPEC are not about making us safer or more energy independent but about a few votes. But, it's your blog so feel free to provide examples of Obama pandering to the rich.

Workers need jobs, not bandaid programs after these have been exported to China.

On the other hand, congrats for the positive post.
