I Hate The Americans

I  saw something on the news last night that upset me so much  I am motivated to write my first internet blog ever. I doubt anyone will read this so I’m going for it, though I’m a nurse not a writer.
The news story was about US troops breaking into a house in Hadith last November, the justification for which is now being investigated, as 15 innocent civilians were killed in the raid.  US troops state the raid on the home was initiated by an IED explosion which killed a soldier, followed by gunfire at the troops coming from the area of the home.   Now, many will argue about whether their response was justified or not but the fact is, these kinds of things happen in a war.  War is not neat and clean.  Things aren’t always clear.  Ugly things happen.   Soldiers and civilians alike fear for and too often lose their lives.  There is noise and confusion and there are misunderstandings and miscommunications, especially when the two sides don’t speak the same language.
In fact, I have always been against the US invading Iraq primarily because in a war, people die.  Newsflash:  war is death and destruction, as in “It’s  good that war is hell, lest we grow too fond of it.”  Having done trauma nursing for 16 years I’ve seen my share of gunshot victims as well as victims of other forms of violence and trust me, it ain’t pretty in real life.  Neither is the aftermath of grief and sorrow.  Unfortunately too many people don’t seem to think about this.  Instead, they make excuses for why they must fight.
Oh, right,  the war on terror.  Yet bin Laden, who has forever destroyed American life as we knew it, remains free to pop up every now and again,  so cheeky as to impose himself on our electoral process, offer us deals, and even with the audacity to lecture Americans on what books to read! (Like, sure buddy, I’ll read the Rogue State by William Blum if you read the New Testament by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  A la Howie Mandel,  Deal…or No Deal?)
And so, from the beginning, I had an unshakable feeling that invading Iraq was a bad idea. Why couldn’t they just concentrate on bin Laden, the one who’s trying to take us down? Besides that, how did they expect to walk-or rather bomb their way into this country that has done nothing to us and with whom we have nothing  in common except a mutual lack of cultural understanding, take out the power structure then cleanly set up a new government? I mean, just saying it sounds silly.   My instincts told me it would become another Vietnam.
But, with President Bush’s Top Gun declaration of Mission Accomplished, I had some hope it wouldn’t.  Yes, hoping my intuitions were wrong and Mr. Bush was right, I waited for the restoration of calm in Iraq and the US troops to return home.  When it didn’t and they didn’t, I went back to thinking that we were going the way of Vietnam.  When the number of troops killed hit 200,  I told friends that I believed that this war would drag on and that one day the number of American troops killed in Iraq would equal and then surpass the number of Americans who died on September 11, 2001.
Now that day is getting closer and closer.   Tears for sure on the day it comes.
The upsetting news report I  saw last night said that the surviving family members of the tragic Hadith incident were compensated with $2500 from the US  for each person who died.  Then it showed a little Iraqi girl,  who had seen her father being shot and who lost 7 of her family members.  Through the translator she was saying,  “ I hate them.  They kill people then say they are sorry. I hate the Americans.  The whole world hates the Americans for what they’ve done here.”

Her words gave me the chills. Out of the mouths of babes.   In addition to the death and destruction of war, I could now add lasting hatred and animosity between peoples.  Hearts and minds? Yeah right.  Hard to win hearts and minds with a gun in your hand.  Behind that one little girl’s words,  there’s a much bigger picture.  This terrible war started by George Bush for no good reason may well create a  generation of  Iraqi children who feel this way about us. “ I hate the Americans”.  If things continue the way they are going in Iraq and without  major diplomatic interventions, Mr. Bush will have brilliantly  succeeded at insuring that there will be plenty of enemies for our children to face in the future. So much for the war on terror.

People do read. And I can certainly sympathize with your pain. The incident at Hadith sounds like a horrible thing to happen to anyone.

But I should point out that the war it isn't for no good reason, just for no good reason that YOU know.  That is not the same thing.

Yes , it is horrible that anyone should ever be hurt, to die or be any sort of casualty.  But you work in a medical trauma environment, you know that sometimes people do, and sometimes the doctor has to amputate or perform other surgery to save the victims life. It is not often easy for a doctor to determine when it is necessary or not, and sometimes they make mistakes.

Political leaders are doctors for whole civilizations, and they have the same issues to deal with, except that their form of surgery is called war. You don't assume that a doctor usually amputates because he needs the fees, give politicians the same benefit of the doubt. Unless you suspect that the soldiers did that under orders from their superiors, you can't blame anyone beyond them, no matter how much you need to.

And you can't blame wars in general, sometimes they are necessary. I suspect you would not have been happy if the Nazi's had won world war II.

And if you object to the ar in Iraq, you have to argue the reasoning behind it, and you can't, because it hasn't been revealed yet. And it wouldn't matter if every non American objected to our armies, our military has no oblgation to listen to them at all.

But our military's commander in chiief, our President, and your representatives in government do have an obligation to listen to you. If you really object to the war, make those objections known to them. If enough people do, (and I have seen this happen at least once before), the war will end.

So what's the good reason?  Do you know?  Please share.

And if you object to the ar in Iraq, you have to argue the reasoning behind it, and you can't, because it hasn't been revealed yet.

Are you saying that none of us know?  Is it a secret?

And one other thing, my point was not the little girls hatred of American troops, it was her classic childlike blanket hatred of all Americans based on her experience.  That's the problem.

It isn't just Iraqis.

The U.S.A. was characterized by Iran as "The Great Satan" years ago after suffering through U.S. meddling.

Vietnam is only the best known folly of American Imperialism. Go back and read up on the life and times of Nelson Rockefeller. His adventurism in Central and South America make for chilling reading.

For a people who have a self-image as leaders the negativism and disdain for anyone outside the tribe is poisonous to relationships.

During WW II the Brits joked "The problem with the Yanks is they're oversexed, overpaid and over here".

For an overbearing people themselves, pride of nation in U.S. servicemen was hard to take ( although, given an Imperial past, the irony of it was rich ).

Today the U.S. is seen as honouring no law nor recognizing any partnership. Taking friends for granted means you don't get to have them.

This current lot in charge are the absolute pits. I find no surprise in revelations of past Bush family connections with Nazis and of derelection of duty in GWB's military service.

I see no reason to expect that the practice of "fixing the facts" to promote policy has come anywhere near an end.

Yep, America has intervened all over the world in it's own self interests.

In my personal view, thats what it's government is supposed to do. Right now, America has 8 times the wealth and power of the next strongest country.  Judging from those results, the American government is doing it's job properly.

What the rest of the world thinks of America is not significant. The American government is not answerable to the rest of the world.

If, on the other hand, you think that should be a goal of the American government, you are free to elect officials that believe that way, and are willing to implement your views.

There is an election this fall, go for it! Just because I don't believe in it, doesn't mean it's wrong. But America follows the course set by the interactions of all it's people, and right now, you haven't convinced enough people that your direction is better.

So get out there and convince people. If you are unsuccessful, however, remember that the American social contract says that you are still obligated to accept the decisions, even if you don't agree with them. You can try again in the next election.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

"And if you object to the [w]ar in Iraq, you have to argue the reasoning behind it, and you can't, because it hasn't been revealed yet."

WTF? Since when are Americans supposed to go to war for a reason that is not "revealed"? I can think of no other endeavor that would have more reason for people to know exactly what the reasons are for than war.

Have I misunderstood you? This sounds like you are advocating blind allegiance to a warmonger. Heil Bush eh?

Look, I am sorry if I've misinterpretted your point.

user-pic

Not really. Actually I think I know what the reasons are, just from my knowledge of the debates among economists prior to it. I posted on it here.

However, that is not the point. As a citizen, you have no inherent right to know any reason for anything the American government does, it is their job, their responsibility, and, of necessity, often must be done in secrecy.

On the other hand, you have an absolute right to throw the bums out without giving a reason, either. Which means the government has to convince you somehow, or they get thrown out, and someone else takes their place.

Right now, the only thing you know for certain is that America is in a difficult situation, and  that (if you are an American) that you want America to "win", however you may interpret winning. People value things differently, and you may think winning the love of the rest of the world is winning, as apparently the original poster does.

There is no right or wrong in such decisions, I would never imply that. I was just challenging the factual statement that the war was for no good reason.

There are hundreds of thousands of people involved in the military and the government, it is unreasonable to assume that they went stark raving mad all at the same time. They at least must have thought they had a good reason, but, as I said, they are under no obligation to tell you it, and you have no right to expect them to. All you can do is decide if you trust them or not, and if you are happy with the job they are doing. If not, then in the next election, you can work to get them out of office.

It is called democracy. Judging from the results, it seems to work better than the alternatives, which are basically the same thing with invasions, revolutions and coups replacing elections . ..

Karen, welcome. Lots of people read these posts, and yours was a good one.

Hearts and minds is our biggest problem in Iraq, and it's the reason why we cannot "win." When Gonzales signed his torture memo, and Maj. Gen. Miller brought his torture techniques from Gitmo to Abu G, the war, in terms of hearts and minds, was lost.

I agree, except I blame Myers. I really work at being tolerant, and never blaming anyone, but some of his statements...

What we should have done is bribe everyone. I mean, we could have bought the entire country lock, stock and barrell for what we have spent on this war.

The Iraqi's probably preferred refrigerators and generators to predator drones, and would have object even if it was something so horrible as a Wal Mart being dropped on them.

By the way, Karen, it was a excellent post, even if I didn't agree with the premise. I look forward to your future efforts.

Thanks, I like the dissent protects democracy thing.

Thanks. It's from Milton Glaser. From an excellent book called "The Design of Dissent."
