A prominent Republican donor stepped forward Thursday with evidence of an alleged "whisper campaign" against late gubernatorial candidate and Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich (R).

Joplin, Mo. businessman David Humphreys said in an affidavit that state Republican Party chairman John Hancock made "what were in my opinion negative remarks" about Schweich's faith last fall, according to local TV station KYTV.

A curator at the Reagan Library recently disputed Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) breathless tale of being offered the chance to hold the same bible former President Ronald Reagan used to take the oath of office -- at the behest of none other than Nancy Reagan.

But days later, that library curator has backtracked. She told the Associated Press that the governor did not make the request to hold the Bible himself and characterized the matter as a “simple misunderstanding.”

Real estate mogul Donald Trump is going a step further in his presidential machinations for 2016 than he did in 2012.

The New Hampshire Union-Leader and local TV station WMUR reported that Trump plans to announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee on Wednesday, a day before visiting the first-in-the-nation primary state.

"I am the only one who can make America truly great again!" Trump said in a statement obtained by CNBC.
