It was reported earlier and now it’s official. Former Sen. Dan Coats will leave as DNI (overall head of the nation’s sprawling intelligence community) in two weeks and be replaced (assuming Senate confirmation) by a far-right loyalist from the House GOP caucus with little to no relevant experience for the job. The only arguable experience is that he serves on the House intelligence committee. But he’s only starting his third term in the House. To have two terms as a junior member of such a committee serve as meaningful experience or credential for such a position seems laughable.
