During an interview with “Fox and Friends” Friday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) blamed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for the government shutdown, suggesting she was more concerned about winning her speakership than compromising with Republicans on border wall funding.

Well, we are going to have to find compromise. One thing you have to see with the vote yesterday for speaker, you realize why Nancy has not been serious about any offer. That was a very close vote for speaker — all the members that voted against her and a number of members that had to abstain to lower the threshold so she could become speaker. We had another meeting at the White House today. I hope they come back with a serious offer this time. But, as you see from that press, this is really her shutdown because she wants to shut the government down for that point.”

The comments are particularly striking given Trump’s promise, on live television, to take ownership for the shutdown if his demands for wall funding led to that.
