In the wake of the potentially devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) announced today that he no longer supports a plan to expand drilling off the coast of California.

At a press conference today, Schwarzenegger said the startling images of the spill caused him to rethink his position: “You turn on the television and see this enormous disaster, you say to yourself, ‘Why would we want to take on that kind of risk?’

He had proposed a plan to open up drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara County, which would help ease the state’s budget deficit.
