The Republican National Committee announced today that it raised $6.6 million in December. It has $8.4 million on hand, and no debt.

The RNC reports that it’s 2009 fundraising total was $81.3 million, with the average contribution coming in at just under $40. The RNC also claimed nearly 1.2 million active donors — including nearly 370,000 new donors last year.

Michael Steele released the following statement along with the fundraising numbers:

“On behalf of the Republican National Committee, I personally thank every individual who has contributed to the RNC this year, helping to make it one of the most successful off-year fundraising efforts in committee history. The Republican victories in Virginia and New Jersey in 2009, and Scott Brown’s dramatic, come-from-behind win in Massachusetts, could not have been possible without the tremendous support the RNC receives from its solid base of donors. The loyal support of hard working Americans is what makes spectacular victories like Scott Brown’s possible. As we move into the political battles facing the Republican Party in 2010, I am confident that the RNC will have the funds necessary to help state parties and candidates across the country mount their own successful campaigns and bring the American people the representation they are clearly demanding.”
