Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid delivered remarks after the Senate passed a reconciliation bill reshaping parts of the health care overhaul this afternoon. Here are his complete prepared remarks:

We have worked and waited for this moment for a century. Last year, a supermajority of the Senate passed the most crucial social, economic and moral change in a generation. This week, the President signed it into law. And today we made that good law even better for Nevadans and Americans across the country.

We made it better by finally and fully closing the ‘donut hole,’ further reducing the deficit, giving even more tax relief to middle-class families, and cracking down even harder on waste, fraud and abuse in our health system.

This, of course, was a health bill. But it was also a jobs bill. It was also an economic recovery bill. It was a deficit-reduction bill. It was an anti-discrimination bill. It was, truly, a bill of rights. And now it is the law of the land.

The many bills that became this momentous law would not have been possible without the perseverance, hard work and leadership of every single Senator standing with me.

Hundreds of thousands of Nevadans’ lives will be immeasurably improved by this historic reform. And they have these good public servants to thank. I thank them, too.
