A new Gallup poll finds that more Americans approve of the new immigration law in Arizona than disapprove, with 51% of those who have heard of the law saying they favor it. Another 39% oppose.
Of those polled, 79% said they had at least heard of the bill.
Broken down by party, 75% of Republicans who’ve heard of the bill favor it, compared to 50% of independents and 34% of Democrats. On the flip side, 56% of Democrats who have heard of the bill oppose it, compared to 39% of independents and 17% of Republicans.
Of those who’ve heard of the law, 11% have no opinion.
The law, which will go into effect this summer, requires police officers to ask for proof of immigration status when they have a “reasonable suspicion” someone is in the country illegally.
