Here, an airplane goes by the tower as it lands on March 30, 2012. Just one year ago the airport debuted the new, $5 million air traffic control tower paid for by the federal stimulus legislation. Now, automatic budget cuts have the new tower and four others at small to mid-size airports in Maryland at risk for closure. (AP Photo/The Frederick News-Post, Sam Yu) MORE LESS

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — At least two people have been hospitalized after police said an airplane and helicopter collided in midair at the Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland.

Frederick police Lt. Clark Pennington says the aircraft collided Thursday afternoon, and that Maryland State Police are handling the case.

The trauma center at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown received two patients from the airport collision. A hospital spokeswoman said in an email that the patients’ conditions are currently undetermined.

Aerial footage from WJZ-TV in Baltimore showed an airplane that had crashed into a stand of trees.

The airport opened in 1948. It has two runways.

Nurse Nina Pham arrived at the airport last week from Dallas on her way to treatment for Ebola at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
