Last night, NBC reported on a series of e-mails between White House party crashers Tareq and Michaele Salahi and Michele Jones — a White House liaison to the Department of Defense — that the Salahis seem to believe suggest that the couple didn’t crash the White House state dinner last week after all.

“I think the American public is actually going to be extremely surprised with all the details,” Tareq Salahi said yesterday on NBC’s Today.

According to emails that Salahi’s lawyer gave to MSNBC, Jones initially told the Salahis, with whom she appeared to be previously acquainted, that the state dinner was closed but that she’d try to get them into the arrival ceremony. The Salahis thought that meant the dinner’s receiving line, though it appears Jones meant an arrival ceremony earlier that morning.

Regardless, the arrival ceremony was canceled, and Jones told the Salahis via email. She said she’d still work on state dinner tickets — but left them a voicemail the afternoon of the dinner saying the tickets were a no-go.

The Salahis, however, say they didn’t get the message because they were at a salon in Georgetown all afternoon. They showed up at the White House — apparently thinking they might be on the list — and got in.

That night, Salahi emailed Jones.

Hi Michele, you are an angel….Obviously it worked out at the end. We ended up going to the gate…to just check in case it got approved since we didn’t know, and our name was indeed on the list. 🙂

Jones replied the next day.

Tareq, you are most welcome! … Delighted that you and Michaele had a wonderful time 🙂
