President Barack Obama spoke this afternoon at the construction site of the largest Recovery Act project in Virginia about the economy and his $787 billion stimulus package.

“We are going to keep on going until we make sure that every single American in this country who’s looking for work is going to be able to get the kind of well-paying job that supports their family,” Obama said.

Obama said “we’ve made some meaningful progress” and that “our economy is in better shape today than when I took office.”

The president largely credited the stimulus for that improvement, saying it had “spurred job creation and economic growth” and created private sector jobs.

“We’re putting Americans to work doing the work that America needs done — we’re rebuilding our crumbling roads, our bridges, our waterways,” Obama said. “We’re strengthening our nation’s infrastructure in ways that will leave lasting benefits to our communities.”

Obama also said that many stimulus projects are coming in well under budget. “This means we can do more,” he said.
