President Obama said last night that he’s looking for “whose ass to kick” over the Gulf oil spill, in an effort to diffuse critics who say he hasn’t been tough enough on BP and others involved in the leak.

“I don’t sit around just talking to experts because this is a college seminar. We talk to these folks because they potentially have the best answers so I know whose ass to kick,” he told The Today Show’s Matt Lauer.

Critics and pundits have said Obama isn’t angry enough at BP about the spill, and that he took too long to respond after the Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20.

The administration is trying to fight that perception. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs last week told reporters the president is “enraged” and Obama held his first press conference in months to talk about the leak.
