A new NRSC web video attacks the Democratic candidate for Illinois Senate, Alexi Giannoulias, for his “shady ties.” Narrated by a man with a heavy Italian accent, the ad says Giannoulias would “make Tony Soprano proud.”

The web video, which enlists the same font as the title credits for the HBO show The Sopranos, slams Giannoulias for “mob ties” that would supposedly make fictional mobster Tony Soprano “proud.”

It also cites Giannoulias’s supposed ties to disgraced ex-governor Rod Blagojevich, and Tony Rezko, who was convicted of fraud and extortion in 2008.

Notably, the ties referenced are not actually those of Alexi Giannoulias, but of his brother and father, Demetris and Alexis. All three worked at the family’s Broadway Bank until the death of founder and chairman Alexis Giannoulias in 2006.

The ad is currently featured on the NRSC’s new Alexi Giannoulias: Wrong For Illinois website.
