Because sometimes you just need a stronger drink than tea, conservative Nevadans George Harris and Irma Aguirre filed the official papers last week to form the Tequila Party of Nevada.

Harris, a former state GOP official, and Aguirre are co-owners of a Mexican restaurant in Las Vegas.

As Jon Ralston, one of the state’s top political journalists, writes at the Las Vegas Sun:

Harris, in case you don’t know, is best known for being wrong more times than any single individual in Nevada political history. If he makes a prediction — on Election Day, he told folks Sharron Angle would surely win by a couple of points — bet the opposite. This is just a stunt, and a silly one.

Democratic Hispanic activist Fernando Romero reportedly floated the idea to Harris of starting this political party, one that would address Latino issues better than the two major parties.

So Aguirre gathered the necessary signatures and drafted up the party’s official preamble, which includes some of its core tenets:

  • We believe that Americans are Americans, not hyphenated-Americans.
  • We believe political education and information is needed to allow Hispanics to make more informed political decisions.
  • We believe in common sense immigration reform.
  • We believe in low taxes and small government.
  • We believe that free-market capitalism is the best vehicle for achieving the American dream.
  • We believe Hispanic families should have the right and the means to choose the schools that are best for their children.

Doesn’t sound all that different from that other drink-based party, does it?
