The National Coalition on Health Care issued a press release this afternoon following the Senate Finance Committee’s 14-9 vote to pass health insurance reform legislation out of committee. Here’s the full text:

We applaud today’s historic action by Chairman Max Baucus, Senator Snowe and the Senate Finance Committee but remain deeply concerned about the long term sustainability, coverage and affordability of the version of the reform bill voted out of the Finance Committee today.

Absent full coverage, successful health system reform is unachievable. Short-term and long-term cost containment measures must be enacted to ensure not just fiscal neutrality but also the sustainability of reform. In order to provide quality, affordable coverage for all America, Congress must take further steps to meet the challenges posed by the health system cost crisis facing both government and the private sector.

We look forward to working with Congress to achieve responsible system-wide, systemic health care reform in 2009. We have made remarkable progress, but still have much work to do. Indeed, enactment of sustainable health system reform this year will require extraordinary and visionary leadership to reach the difficult compromises necessary to produce what could be the most significant domestic legislative achievement of the past half century. The task ahead remains arduous but the Nation deserves nothing less.
