DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez released a statement following President Obama’s signing of health care reform legislation earlier today. Here’s the full statement:

“Today marks a historic day for the United States of America. It is not often that lawmakers pass, and a President signs into law, a bill that will profoundly change the lives of millions of Americans.

“Today is important because our country advances to a place we should have been years ago, but Washington was never able to reach. Democrats were sent to Washington in 2008 because the challenges facing the country were severe, complex, and urgent. Under the watch of Republicans, the country was on the brink of economic collapse, health care costs were bankrupting businesses and families, and we had no clear strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“But with every pressing issue, Democrats met the challenge, and delivered for the American people. Whether it was returning the economy to a path of growth, reining in the skyrocketing costs of health care, ensuring equal pay for women, or eliminating abusive credit card practices, Democrats have proven that we can get things done despite Republicans being wholly committed to obstructing every attempt at progress.

“With every passing issue, Democrats have proven that we are on the side of the American people, while Republicans audaciously fight for the special interests. We will have a strong argument to make to voters in November – not just that we are delivering progress, but that we are fighting and delivering for them.”
