In an interview to air tonight, General Stanley McChrystal said that he believes the U.S. has “made progress” in Afghanistan, and that it’s “on the way to convincing the Afghan people that we’re here to protect them.”

In an interview with Diane Sawyer, McChrystal was asked whether he thinks the U.S. has turned the tide in Afghanistan. He replied: “I believe we’re doing that now. I believe that we have changed the way we operate in Afghanistan, we’ve changed some of our structures. And I think we’re on the way to convincing the Afghan people that we’re here to protect them.”

McChrystal continued: “We’ve been at this for about seven months now. And I believe we’ve made progress. It’s not a completed mission yet.”

He also said that he would only give up hope that the mission can be completed if “the Afghan people have lost faith that the future can be better, and that we can help them get there.”
