Sen. John McCain, once dubbed “The Original Maverick” by his own presidential campaign, told Newsweek recently that he has “never” seen himself in quite the same light.
“I never considered myself a maverick,” he said. “I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities.”
It came as a surprise for those who covered the 2008 race between McCain and President Obama. McCain was known to the press as the “maverick,” sometimes adoringly and sometimes chidingly, throughout the long campaign.
But it’s not a title he shirked from.
