Fox News host Lou Dobbs — an ardent defender of President Trump — defended former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was due for sentencing on Tuesday for lying to the FBI. Dobbs suggested the judge overseeing Flynn’s sentencing is a member of special counsel Robert Mueller’s “witch hunt.”

“Former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn’s long delayed sentencing turned into a judicial carnival,” he said at the opening of his show on Tuesday evening. “The federal judge in the case, Emmett Sullivan today sounded more like a member of Robert Mueller’s witch hunt than an dispassionate arbiter of justice.”

Flynn’s sentencing was delayed at his lawyer’s request on Tuesday after it became clear that Sullivan might break with the special counsel’s recommendation and give Flynn jail time, despite his cooperation with the federal probe.

According to reports from the hearing, Sullivan questioned Flynn and his defense team’s recent claims that Flynn wouldn’t have lied to the FBI if he hadn’t been caught off-guard by their questioning. The White House has seized on that talking point and even suggested that Flynn was “ambushed” by agents when he was asked about his contacts with Russian officials last year.

Sullivan also reportedly harped on the seriousness of the crime and told Flynn he had “sold your country out.”
